Configure Alarm Severity and Thresholds

Set Alarm Severity

Use this procedure to set the severity level for individual events.

To set the severity level for an event:

  1. On the MBG main page, click the Administration tab and then click Alarms.

  2. Browse through the list to locate the event you wish to edit, and then click beside it.

  3. In the Severity list, select one of the following: Cleared, Indeterminate, Warning, Minor, Major, or Critical.

  4. Click Save.
    When the specified event occurs, it will be assigned the severity level you selected.

Set SNMP Threshold

Use this procedure to set the thresholds for SNMP traps.

To set the threshold for SNMP traps:

  1. On the MBG main page of the master server, click the Administration tab and then click Alarms

  2. In the Trap severity threshold list, select one of the following: Cleared, Indeterminate, Warning, Minor, Major, or Critical.

  3. Click Save.
    An SNMP trap is issued for any event that exceeds the threshold you selected.

View Application Event Logs

Use this procedure to display the current alarm state and application event logs for MBG.

The alarm states are:

Note: Some deployments may display a Critical alarm after initial installation. Follow the instructions below to clear the alarm.

To view event logs:

  1. Access the MSL Server Manager.

  2. Under Administration, click Event viewer.

  3. Select the number of events that you want to display per page from the Events per Page drop-down menu.

  4. The Boundary dates and times are populated automatically by the system. To enter non-default values:

  1. Select the alarm Severity filter. All logs with the selected alarm severity or higher will be displayed.

  2. In the Text filter field, enter any text that you want the logs to be filtered against. Only logs that contain the specified text will be displayed. The filter is applied against the log data in the "Application", "Event type", "Value" and "Description" fields.

  3. Check the Regular expression box if you want to apply the text filter in the format of a regular expression.  A regular expression (abbreviated as regexp, regex, or regxp) is a string that describes or matches a set of strings, such as particular characters, words, or patterns of characters, according to certain syntax rules.

  4. Select the Show Cleared Events box if you want to view both cleared and new events. Clear the box if you only want to view new events.

Note: Events may also be cleared automatically by the applications.  

  1. Check the Auto Reload box if you want the system to automatically reload the events each time you open the page.

  2. Click Reload. The event logs are displayed.

Severity

Level of severity associated with this alarm

  • Cleared (green): No alarms have been raised since the alarms were last cleared.

  • Indeterminate (turquoise): The cause of the alarm cannot be determined at this time.

  • Warning (blue): Indicates an "information only" alarm.

  • Minor (yellow): Indicates a fault which affects service. This may result in a major degradation in service and requires attention to minimize customer complaints.

  • Major (orange): Indicates a fault which will cause a major degradation in service and requires attention as soon as possible.

  • Critical (red): Indicates a total loss of service which demands immediate attention.

The "Indeterminate", "Warning" and "Cleared" states are informational only.
