Media resources

The system requires media resources for the real-time processing of media data of various functions. For Virtual Appliance, the media resources of the integrated Mitel Media Server are made available for the connected satellites by DSP chips on the mainboard/CPU1 and on additionally fitted DSP modules.

Table 1. Soft media switch

Parameter

Description

Enable

The integrated Mitel Media Server is enabled (default value).

State

Operational The Mitel Media Server is ready for use.

Barred / Disabled: The Mitel Media Server has been disabled or is not ready for use. In all cases, the system needs to be restarted.

Active VoIP/FoIP channels

You can see here the number of currently and actively used voice channels.

The DSP chip on the mainboard/CPU1 and the individual DSP chips on the DSP modules can be assigned one or more functions. The DSP resources can be used for DECT telephony, Voice over IP, fax transmissions, audio services, integrated mobile phones, additional dial tone and busy tone recipients on many analogue network interfaces FXO (Mitel 470 only) or for CAS (signalling protocol for PRI network interface in certain countries) (Mitel 470 only). This means that for each DSP chip a specific number of channels is available for the corresponding functions.

Parameter

Description

Enable

The standard media switch is activated (default value).

State

Operational The standard media switch is ready for use.

Barred / Disabled: The standard media switch has been disabled or is not ready for use. In all cases, the system needs to be restarted.

VoIP mode

No VoIP: No VoIP channels can be configured.

G.711: The G.711 codec is used for all VoIP channels. The advantage is that more VoIP channels per DSP are possible.

G.711/G.729: This is a combined mode where G.711 or G.729 is used depending on the situation.

Secure G.711: Encrypted transmission with G.711.

Secure G.711/G.729: Encrypted transmission, depending on situation, with G.711 or G.729.

notes:

If the VoIP mode is set to G.711, two VoIP channels per system can be used without a licence. For VoIP channels and all other VoIP modes, each VoIP channel requires a VoIP Channels for Standard Media Switch licence. For modes with encryption (secure modes), the global Secure VoIP licence is also required.

You can find other VoIP settings in the VoIP view.

In the Section See also.. you can find more detailed information on the structure VoIP channels.

Voice mail mode

The Normal (G.711 or G.729) hybrid mode handles both audio formats.

In Expanded (G.729 only) mode up to 12 audio channels are available for communication server. However, the quality of the audio data is somewhat poorer as a result of the compression.

Note:

On the Mitel 470 communication server G.711 audio channels are always used for audio services. The Voice mail mode parameter can therefore not be changed for this system.

Echo tail length

The period during which echo cancellation is effective is defined here. Echo can occur severally, in particular, with connection to the public network via analogue network interface. In these cases it may be helpful to choose 128 ms as echo duration.

Available VoIP/FoIP channels

Here you can see the available voice channels for the VoIP and FoIP functions. If the number of voice channels does not match the current settings of the DSP resources, the communication server must be restarted.

Active VoIP/FoIP channels

You can see here the number of currently and actively used VoIP or FoIP voice channels.

Table 3. DSP resources (allocating audio channels to functions)

Parameter

Description

DECT

Operation of a DECT system on DSI interfaces with cordless phones. The voice data must be transformed on connections between DECT and non-DECT endpoints. This process requires DSP capacity. DECT channels can be used without a licence.

VoIP

DSP resources are required for the real-time processing of the call data between IP and non-IP endpoints. VoIP channels can be used for IP system phones, SIP phones, SIP network access (SIP access channels), SIP-DECT radio units and SIP access points. In an AIN VoIP channels are also used for call connections between the nodes. Internal connections from IP phones to IP phones do not require VoIP channels. One VoIP Channels for Standard Media Switch licence is required for each VoIP channel.

Note:

Mitel 470 only: the IP media gateway function can also be provided with IP media modules. The necessary DSP resources are located on the IP media modules themselves. Standard media switch and IP media switch are independent of each other and can be used together.

FoIP

For reliable real-time fax transmissions via an IP network using the T.38 fax protocol (ITU-T). FoIP channels can be used without a licence.

Audio

The audio channels are used to playback and record audio data. Additionally, each audio channel is assigned a DTMF receiver for enabling user inputs during playback. Licences (Enterprise Voice Mail, Audio Record & Play Channels, Auto Attendant) and media server resources are required for this.

Audio channels can be used for voice mail, auto attendant, queue with announcement, call recording, announcement with audio file, or conference bridge. The distribution can be configured. Announcement service and music on hold use their own resources.

GSM

Enhanced functionality is achieved for integrated mobile phones by providing special DTMF receivers during the call connection. This means that suffix dialling function codes (e.g. enquiry calls and conference setup) can also be carried out. The number of GSM channels – and therefore the number of DTMF receivers – depends on the number of users with integrated mobile phones who want to use this functionality simultaneously. One Mobile or External Phone Extension licence is required for each integrated mobile phone.

FXO (Mitel 470 only)

The basic resources (fixed DSP functions on the call manager card) cover 16 FXO interfaces. For system configurations with more than 16 FXO interfaces this setting provides additional dialling tone and busy tone receivers.

Note:

The values of the user-definable FXO channels corresponds to the number of FXO interfaces, not the number of additional dialling tone and busy tone receivers.

CAS

CAS (Channel-associated signaling) is a signalling protocol for PRI network interfaces used in certain countries (e.g. Brazil). This setting provides audio transmitters and audio receiver for transmitting the signalling information.

notes:
  • After a first start, all the DSP chips are configured for DECT. Before you can assign other functions, you need to delete these configurations (click the empty field in the list box).
  • To configure VoIP channels, make sure the VoIP mode is not set to No VoIP.
  • Voice mail channels and FoIP channels can only be configured on one DSP chip per communication server.
  • The communication server has to be restarted for the configuration changes of the DSP to take effect.

Assigning DSP resources automatically

Due to the acquired licences, the assistant can estimate the amount of DSP resources required by the functions and automatically create the assignment. The number of acquired licences relevant for automatic DSP configuration is listed under DSP resource assignment. Click the Auto configuration... button to automatically assign the DSP resources. Previous settings are overwritten.

Since no licence is required for DECT and FoIP, you can also indicate in window that opens whether you wish to assign DSP resources for that (see table below).

The assistant does not reserve any DSP resources for DECT. Choose this option if you are using the SIP-DECT solution (radio unit over IP network connected) or if you are not using any cordless phone.

To activate the modifications, you must restart the communication server.

notes:
  • Automatic assignment takes place as a result of the acquired licences and is at times inaccurate for hitch-free operation. Therefore, it is advisable to compare the assignment with the Mitel CPQ DSP configuration table (see next section).
  • Automatic assignment is necessary for individual systems only. This button is not offered in a master's configuration view.

Assigning DSP resources manually

It is advisable to set the values calculated from Mitel CPQ, since it is very difficult to correctly estimate the DSP resources required for a real-time function. Mitel CPQ provides, according to the calculation, not only a component list and a slot layout, but also a DSP configuration table (Results tab, DSP configuration section). If you have special resource-intensive requirements, you can change the calculation basis in Mitel CPQ for these requirements (Systems / Resources register).

To activate the modifications, you must restart the communication server.
