Using integrated DHCP server

You want to use the communication server's integrated DHCP server to address the IP system phones.

The integrated DHCP server automatically recognises whether a request is from an IP system phone and can not only transmit the phone's address coordinates, but also the communication server IP address as well as other configuration data.

Table 1. Configuration parameters transmitted as standard to the IP system phones

Attribute

Explanation

PBX_ADDRESS

IP address of the communication server.

SIP_PORT_PBX

SIP port of the communication server

SIP_PORT_PHONE

SIP port of the IP system phone

VLAN_PRIO

The VLAN priority is read out from the setting CoS priority level.

VLAN_ID/VLAN_ENABLED

The VLAN ID is read from the setting VLAN-ID.

The integrated DHCP server uses DHCP option 60 Vendor class identifier (Option 60)  to identify the IP system phones and DHCP option 43 Vendor-specific information (Option 43) to transmit configuration data.

Alternatively, you can write the configuration parameters in a configuration file and store them on the communication server Using the DHCP server with options.

Setting up the integrated DHCP server

To setup the integrated DHCP server proceed as follows:

  1. Check in the IP addressing whether the communication server (single system or master) addresses statically and whether DHCP is disabled (setting DHCP client).

  2. Check whether any other DHCP server is active in the same IP network. If so, contact the IP administrator to specify an address range for IP and SIP system phones and exclude the address range on the active DHCP server.

  3. Switch on the DHCP server (setting DHCP server).

  4. Enter the address area to be covered with the integrated DHCP server (settings First IP address / Last IP address).

  5. Specify whether the integrated DHCP server is to respond to all requests or only to requests from Mitel terminals (settings DHCP support).

  6. Complete the basic settings of the DHCP server as described in the online help.

Note:

Step 2: The address area of the integrated DHCP server and the communication server IP address must be located on the same subnet.

Step 5: If the IP addressing of the satellites is also to be carried out using the Master's integrated DHCP server, select the setting DHCP support = All.

Integrating IP system phones

After the DHCP server is set up, you can connect the IP system phones.

As soon as an IP system phone has started up, the following sequence begins (simplified):

  • The IP system phone sends an address request together with its MAC address and the vendor class identifier.

  • The integrated DHCP server responds to the request, creates and registers a new link between the MAC address and an IP address from its address range, and sends the IP system phone its address co-ordinates as well as the communication server's IP address.

  • The system phone stores the received configuration data and logs on to the communication server. It is now ready for registration.
