You can upgrade a controller while it is offline (out of service) or online (in service). Offline Upgrades are faster than Online Upgrades but controller downtime is longer because of the number of system reboots required. An Online Upgrade requires only one system reboot, whereas an Offline Upgrade requires two. If a faster upgrade is more important than the amount of downtime for reboots, choose an Offline Upgrade. However, you are strongly advised to perform Offline Upgrades during off-hours to minimize service disruptions caused by system reboots.
NOTES
Controllers with less than 512 MB of RAM support partial Online Upgrades only. With a partial Online Upgrade, the new software files are downloaded and installed while the old load is running. However, the licenses and options configuration and data restore are performed as an Offline Upgrade which requires multiple reboots.
One-step Online Upgrades (which do not require a reboot part way through the upgrade) are supported on AX controllers that have 512 MB of RAM, a 2-GB main Flash and a 4-GB voice mail Flash. MCD Release 4.0 software is also required.
The only direct upgrade path supported by MCD 4.1 is from MCD 4.0 with "Telephone Directory (TelDir) Synchronization via SDS" enabled. Systems running older software must upgrade to MCD 4.0 and enable TelDir Synch before upgrading to 4.1. Systems running 4.0 and using OPS Manager for TelDir Synch can upgrade to 4.1 after following the migration procedure described in Knowledge Base article 09-3070-00008, "Migrating to RDN Synchronization via SDS."
A Backup Failure or Berkeley Database audit alarm will prevent a software upgrade from proceeding. For more information on these alarms and how to resolve them, see “Alarm Categories” in the System Administration Tool Help for MiVoice Business.
The upgrade is a five-step process:
File transfer (downloading the software load to the controller)
Software installation
Data Preservation (backing up and restoring the database)
Configuring Licenses and Options
Software Activation (system reboot)
With an Offline Upgrade, all five steps are done in succession, ending with a system reboot. With an Online Upgrade, you need to schedule when the Data Preservation and Software Activation happens, such as after the file transfer is completed or at a specified time thereafter.
NOTE: No database changes are allowed during Data Preservation and Software Activation. This includes changes from the MiVoice Business System Administration Tool, the Desktop tools, and Enterprise Manager. Any changes an extension user makes from the TUI— such as setting DND or call forwarding, and programming speed calls— are allowed.
A sixth step is required for controllers with resilient devices. To minimize service outage during an upgrade, such devices are transferred to their secondary controller while the primary is rebooted. If the Software Installer detects the presence of resilient devices, it will prompt you to start the transfer either immediately or after a specified waiting period elapses. An immediate transfer terminates any active calls. Waiting allows time for users to complete their calls before they are terminated.
NOTE: You must clear the browser cache before performing an upgrade.
In Internet Explorer: Press CTRL+SHIFT+DEL, select Temporary Internet Files and clear Preserve Favorites website data. Leave other check boxes cleared, and then click OK.
In Firefox: press CTRL+SHIFT+DEL, select Everything for "Time range to clear" and Cache, then click OK.
Before you start the upgrade process, copy the upgrade software to your PC or other location that is accessible by the Software Installer or to a directory on the external FTP Server (if you are using one).
If you are performing a remote upgrade, see Connecting to the MiVoice Business System and Supported Configurations for Remote Upgrades and Installations.
Launch the Software Installer.
Select the MiVoice Business variant you want to upgrade. The Identification Screen is displayed.
Enter the required IP address(es) (or DNS Host Name) and login information.
NOTE: The default login ID for the MXe Server is root.
Click Next. The Task Definition Screen appears.
In the Task Definition Screen, select Perform Upgrade.
(Optional) Clear the Offline check box to upgrade the controller while it is online (in service).
NOTE: Mitel recommends that you perform Offline Upgrades after regular business hours to minimize service disruptions caused by system reboots.
Select the FTP server to use to transfer the software files.
Do one of the following:
If using an external FTP server, enter the server IP address and login credentials.
If using the FTP server in the 3300 ICP, enter the full path to the software load in the MiVoice Business Software location box or navigate to it using Browse.
Click Next. The Upgrade Options Definition Screen appears.
Configure the following task options, as required:
Backup (required): creates a database backup file;
Embedded Voice Mail (optional): installs voice mail prompts in selected languages;
Help Files (recommended): installs Help files for the MiVoice Business System Administration Tool;
Configure (optional): changes the License and Option configuration information;
Restore (required): restores the database;
Schedule Data Preservation (required): schedules when the database backup and restore occurs (applies to Online Upgrade only);
Software Activation (required): schedules when system reboot occurs (applies to Online Upgrade only);
Resilient Device Transfer (required): schedules the transfer of resilient devices to their secondary controller (applies to systems with resilient devices only)
Click Next. The In-Progress screen displays.
Click Start to begin the upgrade.
IMPORTANT: If the upgrade fails, determine the cause and fix it. Then, reboot MiVoice Business from the original boot image and re-attempt the upgrade. If MiVoice Business was left without the original boot image after the failure, a bootline change is required to restore it. For assistance with bootline changes, contact Product Support.
You can press Stop to suspend an upgrade in progress and resume it later. For more information, see Stopping and Resuming an Upgrade or Full Install.
